Marilyn Carlson Nelson, former Carlson CEO and chairman emeritus, has been selected as one of the 2014 Oslo Business for Peace Award Honorees. The award is the highest form of recognition given to individual business leaders for fostering peace and stability through creating shared value between business and society.
Marilyn was nominated by the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC) for her leadership promoting responsible business practices, ranging from advocacy for the abolition of sexual exploitation of children to guidance of the UNGC as an active Board member. Five honorees are selected by an independent committee consisting of Nobel Prize winners in peace and in economics. The Award will be presented to the Honorees at the Business for Peace Summit on May 15 at Oslo City Hall in Norway.
The selected Honorees are described by Per L. Saxegaard, chairman, Business for Peace Foundation, as “business persons who, through their own actions and commitments, promote socially responsible and ethical business practices in an outstanding way, and stand out as examples to the world.”
“I am proud of the many contributions that the travel and hospitality industry has historically made to peace and stability in our world, from job creation to facilitating global commerce, promoting understanding between nations and in recent years, responding to the high calling to protect the world’s children from human trafficking,” said Marilyn. “This recognition is further affirmation that business is indeed a force for good, and I am greatly honored.”
The Business for Peace Foundation was established in 2007 to encourage the willingness of business leaders to engage with society as partners in developing shared value and increasing trust between business and society. The foundation has promoted the concept of “businessworthiness” as a way to understand how business leaders can develop trust with communities, contribute to well-being, and create conditions for sustainable development.
The Business for Peace Foundation is collaborating with the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), the City of Oslo, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Oslo Chamber of Commerce, and International Herald Tribune (IHT).
