World Cleanup 2012 initiatives haul in more than 35,000 gallons of waste

Nearly 2,000 Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group employees in 33 countries made a positive impact in 88 local communities when they collected—and when possible, recycled—more than 35,000 gallons of garbage and illegal waste as part of World Cleanup 2012, a series of local, national and regional cleanup events that took place from March through September 2012.

Led by the Let’s Do It! movement, a civic group based in Estonia, hundreds of volunteers, non-government organizations (NGOs), and many other groups and organizations, came together to initiate the most ambitious global volunteer action ever. About half of the world's countries got involved, and seeing the potential impact such a collective effort could have on global sustainability and community well-being, Carlson Rezidor Hotel Group signed on as the initiative’s exclusive hospitality partner, becoming deeply involved in its mission.

In the Americas, 20 hotels, in four countries, reported community clean-up efforts during Responsible Business Action Month in September. Armed with resource materials and tips on how to organize a group clean-up from Let’sDoIt.org; and t-shirt graphics, safety tips and tracking information through News to Use, hotels were encouraged to develop an event that met specific needs in their hometowns.

“We are proud to be the exclusive hospitality partner of this important effort, working hand-in-hand throughout the Americas and with our colleagues in EMEA and Asia Pacific,” said Brenda Schultz, director of Responsible Business, Americas. “It is important for each of us and each of our hotels, to realize that we are more than one hotel, one brand, one industry; we are citizens of the world, and every local effort makes a positive difference globally.”

“Carlson Rezidor’s partnership with World Cleanup 2012 demonstrates our commitment to local populations, our staff and the destinations in which we operate,” Brenda added. “The project was designed to link our staff to the local community and to encourage ongoing sustainability efforts. Our hope is that our hotels will continue to look for ways to get involved as they plan responsible business activities throughout the year.”
